Spin-outs & Start ups

The UK is a hot-house of innovation and entrepreneurship as encouraged through successive Governmental strategies, including R&D tax credits; Patent Box; the establishment of the Catapult programme and Enterprise Zones.

Our Involvement

James Cowper Kreston currently work with over 100 companies that have been developed by research institutions throughout the UK – whether as spinouts (where the IP has originated within the institutions) or as start-ups (where the founder is engaged within the institution and may incubate their ideas within it).

We, therefore, understand the requirements of such businesses of their advisers and pride ourselves on our flexibility in tailoring our services to meet the individual needs of each client at each stage of their lifecycle. We also recognise that because of their growth ambitions and objectives even at an early stage, high quality financial governance (“behaving like a much more grown-up business”) is imperative at every step of the way. We take steps to ensure this can be provided in as cost-effective a way as possible.

Structuring for Success

We’ve partnered with legal and advisory business Mishcon de Reya (formerly Taylor Vinters), and Oxford University Innovation, to deliver the Structuring for Success programme, aimed at tech-focused early-stage companies within the Oxfordshire ecosystem to help them establish, launch and scale their business. Structuring for Success guides new business leaders through the fundamentals of setting up and running an organisation in those key foundation years. Drawing from real-life scenarios, these modules uniquely bring together the legal and financial aspects companies should consider to maximise your business’ potential.
