Ian heads the Private Client Tax team at James Cowper Kreston and is based at our office in Henley-on-Thames. He joined as a partner from a large firm in 2008 where he trained and qualified as a chartered accountant. Ian acts for a wide range of clients advising on income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax matters. His work encompasses both tax compliance and advisory work.
Ian’s portfolio of clients is diverse, in terms of the size and nature of their affairs. In a world where mobility is ever increasing, Ian advises an increasing number of non-UK domiciles on how they are affected by UK taxation.
Outside of work he is the chair of a charity that supports a terminal care hospice, a role which he thoroughly enjoys as it enables him to see professional life from the “other side”.
Ian enjoys working with trustees of family trusts as well as charities and has done so since the 1980s. He has a number of clients where he advises more than one generation of the family – often parents, children and grandchildren.
His work encompasses the UK taxation of both onshore and offshore trusts. Ian advises UK resident beneficiaries as to how the UK tax laws affect them personally in relation to the family trust whether it is onshore or offshore.
He also has longstanding experience of dealing with the taxation of charities and the availability of Gift Aid. He has experience of trading subsidiaries to carry out commercial operations for charities – having a number of subsidiaries in the charity group where he is a trustee.
Ian is also a trustee, either personally or through James Cowper Trustees Limited, of a number of family trusts, including charitable trusts.
Ian has recently been involved in the creation of a family office for one of his clients and is helping to oversee the smooth transition from the previous arrangements.
